Global Psychopathology
Index (GPI)
The Global Psychopathology Index (GPI) is based on the sum of ratings for all 105 Qpass items. The GPI provides a single, convenient measure of the severity of overall psychological distress. As a quantitative measure of the overall severity of psychological distress, the GPI can be useful in designing treatment plans that match the severity of a person’s psychiatric disturbance. Moreover, the GPI can be helpful in predicting the length and course of treatment. Indeed, according to Jacobson and Cooper (1993), “A large body of research literature suggests that an assessment of the severity of psychiatric illness has considerable more predictive power than any . . . diagnostic category alone” (p. 119).*
